An emotional week ended with mixed emotions for 15th-ranked Florida State in a 10-10 tie with North Carolina Saturday.

“Any time you tie, you don’t know whether to be disappointed because you didn’t win or happy because you didn’t get beat,” Florida State Coach Bobby Bowden said. “I really don’t know what I am.”

Florida State wore helmets with a black oval with “Lo” printed on them in memory of Pablo Lopez, the Seminole offensive linemen who was shot to death this week.

North Carolina Coach Dick Crum was in pain, but not because of the game’s outcome. He strained ligaments in his knee when he was hit on a play on the sideline in the first half.

“You don’t like ties, but it was kind of a screwy ball game,” said Crum, who was knocked unconscious briefly. “We’d move the ball well and then make a mistake.”

The last North Carolina mistake was with 1:09 left when quarterback Mark Maye fumbled and Florida State’s Gerald Nichols recovered at the Tar Heels’ 26. Three plays later, Derek Schmidt missed a 36-yard field goal with eight seconds remaining.

The junior kicker also misfired from 44 and 45 yards earlier.

The Seminoles (1-1-1) got their touchdown on a 28-yard pass from backup quarterback Peter Tom Willis to freshman Ronald Lewis with 2:32 left in the third period. Willis then passed to Herb Gainer for the two-point conversion to put Florida State in front, 10-7. But North Carolina (2-0-1) tied the score when Lee Gliarmis kicked a 24-yard field goal with 12:14 left.

The Tar Heels took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when quarterback Jonathan Hall threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Eric Streater. But Hall was ineffective after that and was replaced by Maye early in the third quarter.

Florida State’s first score came early in the second half when Felton Hayes blocked a Kenny Miller punt and the ball went out of bounds in the end zone for a safety.
