College Roundup : UCI Men Win UC Riverside Cross-Country Invitational
The UC Irvine men’s cross-country team opened its 1986 season with a victory Saturday in the UC Riverside Invitational. The UCI women’s team placed second.
Junior Richard Graves finished second (24:21) to lead UC Irvine and senior Rod Curry was fourth (24:27).
Jennifer Abraham led the women by finishing third (17:13); Jill Harrington finished 11th (17:34).
Both UCI teams travel to San Diego next Saturday to compete in the Aztec Invitational.
In other cross-country action:
Chapman Invitational--Claremont Mudd and Scripps colleges won the men’s and women’s races in the Chapman Invitational at Santiago Oaks Regional Park. Chapman finished fourth in the 17-team men’s division and eighth in the 18-team women’s division.
Art Castle of California Lutheran finished first in the men’s division in 22:30. Chapman’s Mike Kennedy was third (22:48).
Brigid Stirli of Claremont Scripps won the women’s division in 18:27. Carla Figueroa (21:80), who was 14th, was the highest Chapman finisher.
In volleyball action:
Utah State 3, Chapman 0--Utah State defeated Chapman, 15-8, 15-5, 15-11, in the seventh-place match of the BYU Invitational at Provo, Utah. Panthers (3-5) finished eighth out of 12 teams in the tournament, which featured 10 Division I schools. Chapman is a Division II team.
Cal State Fullerton 2, Boise State 0--The 15-8, 15-10 victory gave the Titans fifth place in the Titan-Mizuno Volleyball Preview tournament in Titan Gym.
San Diego State won the 12-team tournament with a 15-12, 15-8 victory over Loyola Marymount.
In water polo action:
UC Irvine Tournament--UCI advanced to the consolation round of its 20th annual water polo tournament, winning one of three matches.
The Anteaters beat Air Force, 14-10, as Kevin Wood had four goals. UCI lost to USC, 5-2, and to defending NCAA champion and No. 1-ranked Stanford, 12-5.
UCLA, Stanford, USC and Cal advanced to the championship round today at Heritage Park Pool in Irvine.
Whittier Invitational--The Chapman men’s water polo team opened its season by splitting a pair of games in the Whittier College Invitational. The Panthers lost to Whittier, 17-5, but came back to defeat Dominican College of Northern California, 15-9.
John Bristol led Chapman with nine goals in the two games, including six against Dominican College.
In women’s soccer action:
UC Irvine 5, Claremont Scripps 0--Goalie Valerie Dehn recorded her second straight shutout to lead the 10th-ranked UC Irvine to a victory over Claremont Scripps College in a match played at Claremont.
Pauline Scarano scored two goals to lead the Anteaters. UC Irvine (2-0) plays host to Westmont Monday at 3 p.m. on Crawford Field.
