Giants, Firebirds Extend Their Player Development Contract
The San Francisco Giants and the Phoenix Firebirds of the Pacific Coast League have announced an extension of their player development contract.
The pact ends speculation that the Giants would move their Triple-A affiliation to Hawaii next season.
“We are now beginning to see a close linkage between winning performance of the Firebirds and the resurgence of the Giants,” said Martin Stone, chairman of the board of the Firebirds.
“Manager Jim Lefebvre has turned Phoenix into a winner the last two seasons. The performance of our ballclub and the players that Jim has developed are beginning to play dividends in San Francisco.”
Said Al Rosen, the Giants’ president and general manager: “We are delighted to continue our Triple-A affiliation with the Phoenix Firebirds. The Firebird players have made an immense contribution to the San Francisco Giants all season.”
Stone indicated that discussions were under way for a mid-season exhibition game between the teams.
