Area Surfers Dominate Field at Opening Day at Oceanside

San Diego County surfers, accustommed to the shifting waves at Oceanside Harbor Beach, dominated the first day of competition Tuesday at the Stubbies Pro International surfing tournament. Thirteen local surfers were among 52 surfers advancing to today’s qualifying rounds.

Among the field of local professionals advancing was David Eggers, 16, of San Diego. Eggers and Mike Gillard of Australia upset 1986 U.S. Pro Tour of Surfing champion Mike Cruickshank of Dana Point.

Brian McNulty of Capistrano Beach, 27th in the world, was upset by Lonny Brothers of Solana Beach and Barry Wilson of Ventura. McNulty was the highest-ranked surfer to be eliminated.
