A 27-year-old man who held a knife to the throat of a woman Tuesday was in critical condition at Sharp Memorial Hospital after being shot in the neck by a La Mesa policeman, according to La Mesa Police Sgt. Keith Sears.

Timothy L. Robinson was shot after Police Officer James Green approached a parked car in the 8100 block of Commercial Street and noticed Robinson holding a knife to the throat of a woman in the back seat, Sears said.

Sears said Robinson threatened to kill the woman, whose hands and feet were tied. Green fired one shot through the the car’s driver-side window, hitting Robinson in the left side of the neck.

The woman, who said Robinson had raped her, suffered knife wounds, according to Sears.

Robinson and the woman were co-workers at a La Mesa restaurant, Sears said, and the woman had accepted a ride home from Robinson.

In March, 1983, Robinson was arrested by La Mesa police on a forcible rape charge. He was released from state prison Aug. 28, after serving time on a conviction involving that charge.

Sears said Robinson will be charged with attempted murder, attempted kidnaping, assault with a deadly weapon and rape.
