Orioles Are Expected to Pick Cal Ripken Sr. as Their New Manager

Share

Cal Ripken Sr., the Baltimore Orioles’ third base coach, is expected to be named to succeed Earl Weaver as manager of the Orioles for the 1987 season. Weaver is retiring for the second time at the end of the season.

Ripken, 50, has been with the Baltimore organization for 30 years and has been with the parent club since 1976. He was bypassed when Joe Altobelli was picked to replace Weaver after the 1982 season and again when Weaver was lured out of retirement by team owner Edward Bennett Williams to replace the fired Altobelli on June 14, 1985.

This season, under Weaver, the Orioles pulled within 2 1/2 games of first-place Boston in the American League East Aug. 5, then collapsed and are now threatened with the first last-place finish in the club’s 33-year history.
