Parsons Upset in Surfing Tournament

Laguna Beach’s Mike Parsons, ranked seventh in the world, was upset by Hawaii’s Sunny Garcia Thursday in the opening round of main event competition at the $28,000 Stubbies Pro Surfing Tournament at Oceanside Harbor Beach.
Garcia will face world champion Tom Curren in the second round today.
Four-time world champion Mark Richards of Australia withdrew Thursday because of a back injury.
The field of 160 surfers was narrowed to 32 after the first day of the tournament, which concludes Sunday.
