Laguna Beach’s Parsons Upset by Garcia in Surfing Competition

Laguna Beach’s Mike Parsons, ranked seventh in the world, was upset by Hawaii’s Sunny Garcia Thursday in the opening round of main event competition at the $28,000 Stubbies Pro Surfing Tournament at Oceanside Harbor Beach.

Garcia will face world champion Tom Curren in the second round today.

Defending champion Brad Gerlach of Leucadia and Carlsbad’s Chris Adams are the only San Diego County surfers remaining in the event after Mike Lambresi of Oceanside was defeated Thursday by Matt Kechele of Cocoa Beach, Fla.

Four-time world champion Mark Richards of Australia withdrew from the event Thursday because of a back injury.

The field of 160 surfers was narrowed to 32 after Thursday’s event. Admission to the tournament, which concludes Sunday, is free.
