Baseball Roundup : Barfield Hits 36th Homer to Defeat Red Sox in 12th

Jesse Barfield led off the 12th inning with his 36th home run to snap a scoreless tie and give the Toronto Blue Jays a 1-0 victory over the stumbling Boston Red Sox Friday night at Boston.

Barfield, the American League leader in homers, lashed a 2-0 pitch from reliever Calvin Schiraldi (4-2) over the left-field screen. Mark Eichhorn (14-5) pitched 3 innings for the victory.

Boston’s lead over Toronto was cut to seven games, leaving the magic number at three in the AL East.

Boston’s Wade Boggs went 4 for 6 to take over the American League batting lead at .354. Don Mattingly of the New York Yankees slipped to .350, going 1 for 4 against Detroit.

Roger Clemens, seeking his 25th win, went the first nine innings for Boston, allowing eight hits and no runs.

Detroit 3, N.Y. Yankees 2--Walt Terrell (14-12) pitched a four-hitter in eight-plus innings, and Chet Lemon hit his 12th homer for the Tigers at New York.

Milwaukee 2, Baltimore 0--Rick Manning homered and drove in both runs, and Pete Vuckovich (2-3) combined with two relievers to shut down the Orioles at Milwaukee. It was the seventh straight loss for Baltimore starter Mike Boddicker (14-12), although he allowed only four hits.

Cleveland 9, Seattle 7--Brook Jacoby tripled home Otis Nixon in the top of the 12th inning and scored on second baseman Harold Reynolds’ error on the relay throw to win for the Indians at Seattle.

N.Y. Mets 3, Pittsburgh 1--Keith Hernandez hit a two-run single, and Sid Fernandez (16-6) allowed eight hits in eight-plus innings at Pittsburgh as the Mets won their 101st game, a club record. The 1969 Mets won 100 games.

Philadelphia 5, Montreal 0--Rookie Marvin Freeman (2-0) and Kent Tekulve combined on a one-hitter, and Von Hayes scored three runs for the Phillies at Montreal.

Atlanta 5, Houston 4--Bob Horner hit a two-run homer, his 25th, and the Braves ended Houston’s string of 29 shutout innings when they scored on a wild pitch by Matt Keough in the second inning at Atlanta.

Chicago Cubs 4, St. Louis 1--Rick Sutcliffe (5-14) won his first game since June 2, and Gary Matthews and Brian Dayett hit two-run homers at St. Louis.

Cincinnati 8, San Diego 6--Ron Oester went 3 for 3 and homered for the Reds at San Diego.
