Golf Roundup : Calcavecchia, Azinger Shoot 70s, Share 2-Stroke Lead

Mark Calcavecchia and Paul Azinger each shot a 70 Friday to tie for the second-round lead at 138 in the $400,000 Southwest golf tournament at Abilene, Tex.

The co-leaders were two shots ahead of Morris Hatalsky, who had a 74, and Jack Renner, who had the day’s low round of 69 over the Fairway Oaks Golf Club course.

Bob Eastwood (73), Tom Gleeton (72) and Jeff Maggert (73) were at 141.

Calcavecchia and Azinger both played their rounds after the wind had subsided from the stronger blasts that harassed earlier starters.

Of the top 14 golfers, only D.A. Weibring played in the more severe conditions of the morning, when the average score was 77.9.

Weibring, who had a 76, was tied with Mike McCullough, Ed Fiori, Tony Sills, Pat McGowan, Gene Sauers and Tom Byrum at 142.

PGA champion Bob Tway had a 73 and was at 145.

At St. Andrews, Scotland, Australia and the United States won quarterfinal matches in the $1-million Dunhill Cup team tournament.

Australia, the defending champion, trounced Wales, 3-0, while the United States needed a 15-foot birdie putt from captain Raymond Floyd on the final hole to clinch a 2-1 win over Canada.

Today, the United States will meet Japan, which defeated Argentina, 2-1, and Australia will play Scotland, which beat Ireland, 3-0.
