Big Ten Roundup : Michigan St. and White Roll, 45-10

Lorenzo White rushed for 192 yards and 3 touchdowns Saturday to become Michigan State’s all-time regular-season rushing leader as the Spartans defeated Western Michigan, 45-10, at East Lansing.

White pushed past Steve Smith on Michigan State’s career rushing list, raising his career total to 2,821 yards, 55 more than Smith.

On the NCAA’s all-time yardage list, White moved ahead of former Penn State Heisman Trophy winner John Cappelletti (2,639) and Kansas’ Gale Sayers (2,675).

White’s touchdowns came on runs of 3, 13 and 3 yards as the Spartans (2-1) dominated the Broncos (0-4).

Iowa 69, Texas El Paso 7--Mark Vlasic and Dan McGwire threw two touchdown passes apiece as the No. 15 Hawkeyes (3-0) trounced the Miners (2-3) at Iowa City.

Vlasic left late in the second quarter with an injury after completing 9 of 12 passes for 135 yards.

McGwire, a freshman from Claremont, Calif., played the entire third quarter and hit walk-on Deven Harberts on scoring pass plays of 59 and 54 yards. His only other pass was intercepted.

Ohio State 64, Utah 6--The Buckeyes piled up a school-record 715 yards in total offense in a rout of the Utes at Columbus, Ohio, topping the 644 set in 1974 against Illinois.

Ohio State (2-2) had 394 yards rushing. Vince Workman gained 168 yards in 16 carries, and James Bryant added 145 yards in 19 rushes.

It was the 600th victory in 97 years of football for the Buckeyes, a milestone reached by only six other universities.

Quarterback Jim Karsatos completed 15 of 22 attempts for 224 yards, and the Buckeyes finished with 321 yards passing against the Utes (0-2), who had four turnovers, all leading to Ohio State touchdowns.

Pacific 24, Minnesota 20--Hue Jackson ran for two touchdowns and threw a seven-yard pass for another score at Minneapolis to lead the Tigers to an upset victory over the Gophers.

Jackson rushed for 52 yards in 20 carries and completed 14 of 24 passes for 180 yards to help the Tigers (3-1) collect 420 yards in offense.

The victory was Pacific’s first in four games against the Big Ten. The Gophers, who were beaten, 63-0, last week by Oklahoma, are 1-2.

Wyoming 21, Wisconsin 12--Quarterback Randy Welniak, replacing injured Scott Runyan, passed for 276 yards and 2 touchdowns as the Cowboys knocked off the Badgers at Madison, Wis.

Wisconsin (1-3) scored on a 43-yard field goal by Todd Gregoire in the opening quarter. But the Cowboys (3-1) went ahead, 14-3, at halftime on Welniak’s touchdown passes.

Northwestern 37, Princeton 0--Brian Nuffer ran for 73 yards and 2 touchdowns as the Wildcats (2-1) routed the Tigers (0-2) at Princeton, N.J., in the first Ivy League-Big Ten meeting since 1953.
