A Guidebook to Haunted America

Investigative reporter Arthur Myers has written “The Ghostly Register,” a guidebook to American “haunted houses.” Featured are reports of eerie incidents throughout the United States, anecdotes about apparitions and speculations as to their histories.

In cases where the owners don’t mind visitors, Myers includes their addresses.

He tells of a restaurant in Morristown, N.J., believed to be haunted by a 19th-Century murderer and his victims; The Lodge in Cloudcroft, N.M., where the spirit of a murdered chambermaid has reportedly made phone calls.

Another story is of a group of ghosts near Salem, Va., one of whom has an objectionable odor and has been heard to scream. Then there’s the tale of the Wild Goose, a yacht once owned by actor John Wayne, on which Myers says an apparition believed to be the Duke has reportedly been seen.
