George Rogers’ old problem, the fumble, popped up again Sunday, but he found a way to overcome it.

Rogers rushed for 115 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead the Washington Redskins to a 19-14 victory over the Seattle Seahawks.

“When you carry the ball, fumbles are going to happen,” said Rogers, who dropped the ball twice. “They were hitting hard out there, and I got dazed on the play before the first fumble.”

Rogers committed several fumbles last year and said before the season that he had the problem corrected. He carried the ball 98 times without a fumble until his first bobble against the Seahawks.

The six-year veteran more than atoned for his two first-quarter fumbles (one of which Washington recovered) as he helped the Redskins (4-0) remain atop the NFC East. His second score, from seven yards out, capped a 74-yard drive and gave Washington a 16-7 lead late in the third quarter.

The Seahawks (3-1) cut the gap when David Krieg hit Steve Largent on an 11-yard touchdown pass with 1:50 left in the game, but Seattle could not get past the Washington 49-yard line after getting the ball back with 44 seconds remaining.

Largent caught three passes to equal Harold Carmichael’s NFL-record of catching a pass in 127 consecutive games.

The Seahawks, who entered the game averaging more than 30 points a game, scored the first time they had the ball but didn’t get past the Washington 30-yard line again until the final two minutes of the game. Seattle had only two first downs in the third quarter.

“We just couldn’t make enough big plays to win,” Seahawk Coach Chuck Knox said. “It was just a question of a play here or a play there.”

Krieg completed 19 of 32 passes for 219 yards, but he was intercepted twice.

Washington quarterback Jay Schroeder completed 14 of 26 passes for 195 yards and improved his record as a starter in the NFL to 9-1.

Rogers, who carried the ball 25 times, was pulled from the game after suffering a slight neck injury with about 10 minutes left.

The Redskins have won 27 straight games in which one of their running backs has gained at least 100 yards.

Seattle running back Curt Warner gained 107 yards in the first half, but carried the ball only twice after halftime.
