Fight promoter Butch Lewis said he would not serve as co-promoter of two title fights for the World Boxing Assn. heavyweight championship, but he did not withdraw Michael Spinks from the HBO heavyweight unification series, as had been expected.
Speaking against the apartheid policies of South Africa, Lewis said he would not participate as a co-promoter, with Don King, of a Tony Tubbs-Tim Witherspoon WBA title match. HBO recognizes South African boxing.
He also said he would not participate in a fight between WBA champion Witherspoon and the World Boxing Council champion. The WBC champion will be either Trevor Berbick, who holds the title, or No. 2-ranked contender Mike Tyson.
