Illegal drug traffic is believed to be the major reason for an increased murder rate in San Francisco and Oakland, law agencies say. There have been 92 homicides in San Francisco so far this year, compared to 86 for all of last year, a 43% increase if the trend continues. Oakland reported 106 murders to date, compared to 114 for all of last year. Most of the murders were young men suspected of having connections with the cocaine business, police said.
