The San Francisco 49ers took the risk of losing Wendell Tyler, 31, their leading rusher in two of the last three seasons, by placing the veteran running back on recall waivers. If Tyler, who had been on the 49ers’ injured reserve list, is not claimed within 24 hours by another NFL team, the 49ers would be able to place him on their active roster.

“I’m ready to play whenever they give me the chance. My knee feels fine. It hasn’t been puffing up or anything,” Tyler said.

Any team claiming Tyler would have to honor his 1986 contract, in the $500,000 range, and gamble on his physical condition.
