The New York Yankees signed Manager Lou Piniella to a new two-year contract and named Woody Woodward vice president and general manager.
Woodward replaces Clyde King, who was named as special assistant to owner George Steinbrenner.
Piniella, who got a one-year contract last October, managed the Yankees to a 90-72 record, fifth-best in baseball this season. The team won 18 of its last 25 games and finished second in the American League East, 5 1/2 games behind Boston.
The Yankees also said that Bob Quinn, who joined the team in September, has taken over Woodward’s former position as vice president, baseball administration.
