WFC Roundup : Portland State’s Johnson Gets 145 Yards to Lead 41-17 Rout Over Southern Utah
Kevin Johnson rushed for 145 yards and two touchdowns to lead Portland State to a 41-17 win over Southern Utah State in its Western Football Conference opener at Portland on Saturday. It was Johnson’s third straight game over 100 yards.
Portland State (3-2, 1-0) held a 14-10 lead at the half, but turned the game into a rout with three second-half touchdowns. Southern Utah State dropped to 5-2 and 1-2.
CS Sacramento 38, Santa Clara 7--Quarterback Angelo Oliva completed 13 of 20 passes for 194 yards to lead Sacramento State over defending conference champion Santa Clara.
Santa Clara (1-4, 1-1) failed to score in the final half.
Oliva hit Lin Klinkhammer with a 52-yard touchdown pass early in the third quarter to spur a 31-point Sacramento scoring surge. The game was tied, 7-7, at the half.
Fullback Rob Harrison gained 121 yards in 19 carries for Sacramento, which improved to 2-2-1 and 1-0. Santa Clara quarterback Greg Calcagno completed 14 of 33 attempts for 94 yards and the team’s only touchdown.
CS Hayward 17, Cal Poly SLO 14--Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s Art Gonzales missed a 41-yard field goal that would have tied the score with 11 seconds left in the fourth quarter in the nonconference game at San Luis Obispo.
Hayward (4-1) was led by quarterback Bill Neil, who completed 14 of 26 passes for 227 yards and a touchdown. Robert Perez of San Luis Obispo (2-2) was 18 of 43 for 227 yards and two touchdowns.
