It’s Lights Out for the Knicks and Cartwright

Even before the New York Knicks lost to the Lakers, 112-87, in an NBA exhibition game Sunday night at the Forum, they suffered an even bigger loss when injury-prone center Bill Cartwright tangled with a light bulb in the locker room.

Cartwright, who missed most of the last two seasons with injuries to his left foot, was scheduled to start Sunday night’s game. But while stretching in the locker room beforehand, he lifted his left arm and shattered a fluorescent light bulb attached to the ceiling. Cartwright suffered a partial tear of a tendon in the middle finger of his left hand and is expected to be out about three weeks.

With or without Cartwright, the Knicks usually provide little challenge for the Lakers. Sunday’s game was no exception.

Patrick Ewing had 12 points and 8 rebounds and not much help inside. Rookie Kenny Walker was impressive, scoring 15 points from his small forward spot.

The Lakers were led by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s 19 points. Magic Johnson and A.C. Green each had 15 and Michael Cooper 14.
