A man who stopped his car on the side of the Golden State Freeway in Newhall to help a woman whose car was disabled was crushed to death Wednesday morning when a truck slammed into the woman’s car, then overturned on him, the California Highway Patrol said.

The victim had not been identified late Wednesday, Officer Ralph Elvira said.

The stage for the crash was set shortly after 5 a.m. when a car driven by Kimberly Necessary, 19, of Valencia, struck a guard rail and came to rest in the outside lanes of the northbound freeway, north of Weldon Canyon Road, Elvira said.

The woman ran to the side of the freeway, and both the victim and another motorist pulled over to the shoulder to help her, the officer said.

Minutes later, a truck driven by Richard A. Watts, 46, of Burbank, slammed into the woman’s car, went out of control, then struck one car parked on the shoulder and overturned on the victim and his car, Elvira said.

Necessary was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving, the CHP officer said. She and Watts were treated for minor injuries at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital in Newhall, the CHP officer said.
