Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies were organizing a search team late Thursday night to comb a rugged mountain area eight miles north of the Burbank Airport, where a light plane was believed to have gone down, authorities said.
The plane, a single-engine Cessna 172, was en route from Van Nuys Airport to Santa Monica Airport when it left Burbank Airport radar screens at about 8:40 p.m., a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said.
A Los Angeles Police Department helicopter discontinued its search shortly before 10 p.m. after being hampered by heavy clouds, said Police Lt. Keith Johnson. There was no information about what caused the apparent crash or about the plane’s occupants.
