Quarterback John Paye completed 14 of 20 passes for 191 yards and 2 touchdowns for the Cardinal, 5-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play heading into next Saturday’s game against USC.

Muster, a junior, moved into second on Stanford’s career rushing list with 1,822 yards.

Stanford’s Thomas Henley scored on a 92-yard punt return to set a school record. The longest previous punt return was 80 yards in 1923.

Arizona 23, Oregon State 12--Gary Coston kicked three field goals, and freshman tailback Art Greathouse scored on a 43-yard run as the 16th-ranked Wildcats beat the Beavers in a Pac-10 game at Tucson.

Greathouse’s touchdown with 1:52 remaining capped a 46-yard drive in two plays that thwarted a late Oregon State threat and sealed the victory for the Wildcats (5-1 and 2-1).

The Beavers, a heavy underdog, had closed to within 16-12 with 2:30 left on Dowell Williams’ 1-yard run to cap a 73-yard drive. Oregon State (1-5 and 1-3) tried a two-point conversion pass, but it failed.

Coston’s 32-yard field goal with 9:29 to play in the third quarter was his 12th straight, tying a school record set by Max Zendejas in 1984.

Erik Wilhelm, the Beavers’ sophomore quarterback who leads the conference in passing, completed 35 of 56 attempts for 347 yards with no interceptions. Jenkins was 9 of 18 for 84 yards and 1 interception.
