COLLEGE FOOTBALL : Far West Roundup : Heimuli Runs for 177 Yards as BYU Wins Before Record Crowd at Wyoming, 34-22

Lakei Heimuli rushed for 177 yards and a touchdown to lead Brigham Young to a 34-22 Western Athletic Conference victory over Wyoming Saturday before a record crowd of 31,742 at Laramie, Wyo.

Heimuli’s touchdown run from a yard out gave Brigham Young a 28-8 lead midway through the third quarter and helped stifle Wyoming’s upset hopes.

However, the Cougars needed four field goals from Leonard Chitty, two of them in the final period, to seal the victory.

BYU, ranked second in the nation in passing offense, ground out 309 yards rushing and held Wyoming to 92 on the ground. BYU quarterback Steve Lindsley completed 14 of 23 passes for 203 yards but was intercepted three times.

Wyoming, which had been averaging 278 yards a game passing, was held to 176. BYU registered five sacks.

Wyoming got its first touchdown with 9:30 to go in the third quarter on a 15-yard run by backup quarterback Randy Welniak, who replaced Scott Runyan after Runyan injured his right hand in the first quarter.

After Heimuli’s touchdown, Wyoming free safety Steve Clayton intercepted a Lindsley pass to set up a 16-yard touchdown pass from Welniak to Anthony Sargent that pulled Wyoming within 28-15.

BYU is 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the WAC, while Wyoming is 4-3 and 2-1.

Colorado State 31, Hawaii 7--Safety Ron Cortell intercepted two passes and returned one for a touchdown to lead the Rams to a WAC victory at Fort Collins, Colo.

Cortell’s interceptions, both in the first quarter, helped the Rams jump to a 14-0 lead. His first theft led to fullback Steve Bartalo’s three-yard touchdown run. He returned his second off Hawaii quarterback Greg Tipton 32 yards for a touchdown.

Bartalo also scored on a one-yard plunge to cap a 65-yard, 14-play drive early in the second quarter.
