A man driving along a busy downtown street was killed when hit by a large chunk of concrete that fell from a quake-damaged building, police said Friday.

The chunk, weighing 45 pounds, put a one-foot hole in the car roof after falling six stories. The driver was killed instantly.

Three workers were detained for questioning in the accident.

Nearly 3,000 buildings were badly damaged by earthquakes in September, 1985. A few structures are being destroyed with a wrecking ball, but most are being dismantled by crews of men with sledgehammers.
