COLLEGE FOOTBALL : PCAA Roundup : Mike Perez (31 of 39) Passes for 508 Yards as San Jose State Defeats Pacific, 44-15

Quarterback Mike Perez passed for 508 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead San Jose State to a 44-15 victory over University of the Pacific Saturday in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. game at Stockton.

Perez, the nation’s total-offense leader going into the game, completed 31 of 39 passes. His 508 yards is the most in an NCAA game this season.

Perez had 536 yards in total offense, and the Spartans had 724 yards, both NCAA highs this season. Perez’s passing and total offense yardage are conference and school records.

San Jose is 6-2 overall and 4-0 in the PCAA. Pacific is 4-4 and 2-2.

San Jose opened the scoring in the first quarter on a three-yard run by Kenny Jackson, who rushed for 111 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Pacific tied the score in the second quarter on an 80-yard touchdown pass from Hue Jackson to Booker Guyton.

San Jose took a 23-7 lead at the half on a 28-yard field goal by Sergio Olivarez, a 2-yard touchdown run by Jackson and a 24-yard touchdown pass from Perez to Guy Liggins.

Pacific scored early in the third quarter on a 23-yard pass from Jackson to Kennedy Bryant. A two-point conversion made it 23-15.

Utah State 7, Nevada Las Vegas 6--A 41-yard touchdown pass from Tom Ponich to wide receiver Kendal Smith was all the Aggies needed to beat the Rebels in a PCAA game at Logan, Utah.

The pass came as time ran out in the first quarter, and Dene Garner provided the winning margin with the point-after kick as Utah State improved to 2-5 overall and 2-2 in the PCAA. UNLV is 3-4 and 1-3.

Glen Crawford and Demetrius Brown each finished with 64 yards rushing as Utah State gained 114 net yards rushing, twice the Aggies’ average output this season.

UNLV’s Jim Cook kicked field goals of 41 and 47 yards in the third quarter to provide the Rebels’ only offensive punch. The 47-yarder was the longest in Cook’s career.

The Rebels threatened to tie or go ahead on two occasions, once in each half, but turned the ball over to the Aggies each time.

Las Vegas blew a scoring opportunity in the third quarter when David Hollis returned a punt 24 yards to the Utah State 14. The Rebels drove to the one-yard line, where they had a third and goal when quarterback Steve Stallworth tossed a pitch to running back Elbert Woods. But Woods never touched the ball, and Utah State defensive back Pondre Davis pounced on it at the two.

Stallworth completed 8 of 17 passes for 82 yards and 1 interception as UNLV amassed 179 yards total offense to Utah State’s 201.

New Mexico 45, New Mexico St. 14--Quarterback Ned James threw for a school record-tying four touchdowns to lead the Lobos of the Western Athletic Conference to a victory over the Aggies of the PCAA at Albuquerque.

New Mexico (3-5) is on a three-game winning streak. New Mexico State (1-8) has lost seven straight and is allowing an average of 35 points per game this season.

New Mexico has been winning since James took over for the injured Billy Rucker three weeks ago. James threw touchdown passes of 24 and 27 yards to flanker Terance Mathis, hit wide receiver Keith Arbon with an 11-yard touchdown strike and connected with halfback Kevin Burgess on a 42-yard scoring pass play.

The four touchdown passes tied the school record set by Steve Myers in 1975 against Arizona.

New Mexico rolled up 565 yards compared to the Aggies’ 376.
