San Diego Volleyball : Johnson’s 30 Kills Lead USIU Over Pepperdine

Claudia Johnson led United States International University with 30 kills as the Gulls defeated visiting Pepperdine--ranked No. 14 in NCAA Divison I--15-12, 9-15, 15-9, 15-7, Saturday night in a West Coast Athletic Conference match. Anita Rodriguez added 24 kills for USIU, which is 5-1 and 15-12.

In another WCAC match, the University of San Diego remained winless as the Toreros were defeated by Loyola Marymount University, 15-10, 15-6, 16-14. Loyola, 5-1 and 17-6, was led by Cathy Petrissans with 13 kills. USD is 0-6 and 0-15.

UC San Diego, ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division III play, lost to No. 5-ranked Menlo College in the semifinals of the Occidental Invitational Tournament at Los Angeles but came back to defeat Colorado College to take third place. The Tritons lost to Menlo, 12-15, 14-16, and beat Colorado, 11-15, 15-9, 15-12. Fresno Pacific, which lost to UCSD Friday, defeated Menlo in the final, 15-9, 12-15, 15-8.

The Tritons are 31-6. UCSD’s Carol Lipson was named to the all-tournament team.

Point Loma Nazarene College beat Christ College at home, 15-7, 15-1, 15-4, in a nonleague game. Lisa VanderFeer had 10 kills and Connie Navarro had 9 to lead Point Loma, which is 10-13. Christ College, of Los Angeles, is 8-17.
