Escondido
A 35-year-old man was in critical condition Sunday after setting himself on fire in front of the Escondido police station.
About 11 p.m. Saturday, a man called from the front of the station building and told the dispatcher he was going to kill himself, Escondido police spokesman Frank Skelton said.
Two officers were sent outside to talk to him. As they approached him, the man doused himself with a flammable liquid and lit a match, Skelton said.
Michael J. Sullivan of Escondido suffered second- and third-degree burns over 65% of his body and was taken by Life Flight helicopter to UC San Diego Medical Center. Skelton said Sullivan gave no reason for his actions.
