A San Jose man was shot to death by police officers who said the man was holding a sawed-off shotgun on them in a confrontation outside his home. The victim was identified as Anton Ward, 31. Police said three officers, Rich Vasquez, Jim Rodriguez and Humberto Renteria, were conducting a neighborhood check when Ward appeared at the back of his house with the gun. The officers warned Ward to drop the gun, police said, but he continued to aim the weapon at them. The three said they opened fire, hitting Ward three times. He died at a hospital. The officers were put on administrative leave, a routine step after a shooting.
