Vince Legaspi, at 5-feet-9 170-pounds, looks more like a cornerback than a defensive lineman. But Friday night the Edison senior tackle looked much bigger when he keyed the Charger defense to a 3-0 victory over Fountain Valley in front of a capacity crowd of 7,600 at LeBard Stadium.

“Coach (Terry) Lorentzen told us to put a lot of pressure on their quarterback and . . . that’s what we did tonight,” Legaspi said. Legaspi got three of the Chargers’ six sacks of David Henigan as Edison (3-1, 7-2) helped its playoff chances.

Edison’s only score was set up after a fumble recovery by Mike Prince at the Fountain Valley 20-yard line. The Chargers could move the ball only six yards and settled for a 31-yard field goal by Eric Thayer in the first quarter.

Fumbles stopped two Edison scoring threats, including one inside the Baron 15-yard line in the fourth quarter. However, Fountain Valley was having worse luck moving the ball against the Chargers. The Barons (2-2, 2-7) missed a 24-yard field-goal attempt in the first quarter and never could mount much of an offense.

“The defense saved us,” Edison Coach Dave White said. “The offense didn’t do what we were capable of doing but Fountain Valley had to do a lot with that. They played a great game.”

Fountain Valley Coach Mike Milner didn’t agree.

“It’s hard to feel positive when you lose 3-0,” Milner said. “The bottom line is winning and we didn’t win the football game.

“We had guys loose in their secondary and we couldn’t hit them. If we would have been able to protect our passer, it might have been different.
