Portland Trail Blazers center Sam Bowie, whose basketball career has been plagued by injuries, was hospitalized in good condition Saturday in Portland after suffering a broken right leg Friday night in the team’s 120-113 overtime win over the Dallas Mavericks.

The leg was placed in a temporary plastic cast pending a decision on whether surgery will be necessary, a spokesman said.

Trainer Ron Culp described the injury as a fracture “to the mid-shaft area of the right tibia.”

Bowie lost his balance and hit the floor hard after a turnaround jump shot with 5:14 to play. He shouted that his leg was broken, and team officials ran to his side.

The injury was the latest in a string that have troubled the 7-1 center. However, his previous injuries have involved his left leg, not the right.

His first injury was to his left shin as a sophomore at the University of Kentucky, causing him to miss two full seasons. Last season, following another injury, he had a bone graft performed on the left shin.
