Big Ten Roundup : Indiana Shuts Down Michigan St.; Illinois Upsets No. 16 Iowa, 20-16

Indiana’s defenders heard the talk, and didn’t like it.

Fueled by comments made by Michigan State players, the Hoosiers swarmed over the Spartans’ offense Saturday, leading the way to a 17-14 Big Ten victory at Lansing, Mich.

“We heard during the week that they said they were going to score 65 points on our defense,” linebacker Vern Waiters said. “That’s ridiculous. We played Michigan, and they didn’t even do that.

“I think they boosted us up by telling us things they were going to do to us.”

Waiters had four of Indiana’s five sacks, and the Hoosiers (6-3 overall, 3-3 in the conference) also had three interceptions and recovered two fumbles.

Indiana held All-American tailback Lorenzo White to 65 yards rushing and limited Michigan State (5-4, 3-3) to 28 net yards rushing.

Indiana’s Alex Green intercepted Dave Yarema’s pass at the two-yard line to end Michigan State’s final drive with 28 seconds left.

Freshman Anthony Thompson rushed 35 times for 126 yards and 1 touchdown for Indiana. Thompson scored on a three-yard run in the first quarter, and Green returned an intercepted pass 29 yards for a score to make it 14-0 in the second quarter.

Andre Rison, who had 11 catches for 196 yards--both Michigan State records--scored on a 12-yard pass from fullback Bobby Morse to make it 14-6.

Indiana’s Pete Stoyanovich kicked a 35-yard field goal to make it 17-6 with eight minutes left, but the Spartans got close on Yarema’s 4-yard scoring pass to Rich Gicewicz with 5:03 remaining.

Illinois 20, Iowa 16--Brian Menkhausen passed for one touchdown and ran for another as the Illini upset the 16th-ranked Hawkeyes at Champaign, Ill.

Iowa (6-3, 3-3) had a 10-0 lead before Menkhausen connected with Stephen Pierce on a 54-yard scoring pass play in the third quarter. Menkhausen capped a fourth-quarter scoring drive with a one-yard sneak to put Illinois (3-6, 2-4) ahead for good.

Chris Siambekos’ field goals from 29 yards and 42 yards increased the Illini lead to 20-10.

Iowa’s Kevin Harmon scored on a three-yard run in the final minutes.

Michigan 31, Purdue 7--Coach Bo Schembechler tied Fielding Yost’s school record for victories as the No. 3 Wolverines rolled past the Boilermakers at West Lafayette, Ind.

The victory extended the nation’s longest major college unbeaten string to 15 games and gave Schembechler his 165th victory at Michigan, tying Yost who coached from 1901-26.

Jim Harbaugh completed 14 of 20 passes for 154 yards and a touchdown for Michigan (9-0, 6-0). Harbaugh hit 8 of his first 9 passes and completed 13 of 16 for 137 yards in the first half as Michigan built a 24-0 lead.

Purdue (2-7, 1-5) scored on a 13-yard pass from Doug Downing to Jerry Chaney.

Ohio State 30, Northwestern 9--Vince Workman rushed for 123 yards and scored touchdowns of 14 and 2 yards as the No. 11 Buckeyes turned back the Wildcats at Columbus, Ohio, for their eighth straight victory.

Jim Karsatos completed 15 of 29 passes for 211 yards for Ohio State (8-2, 6-0). Cris Carter had 7 catches for 103 yards--his fourth consecutive game of more than 100 yards.

Northwestern (2-7, 0-6) outgained Ohio State, 497 yards to 450, but committed five turnovers.

Matt Frantz kicked field goals of 41, 20 and 23 yards for Ohio State, and Northwestern’s John Duvic made field goals from 32, 39 and 30 yards.

Minnesota 27, Wisconsin 20--Ed Penn scored two touchdowns, including one on a 64-yard pass play, to lead the Gophers past the Badgers at Madison, Wis.

Penn scored on a two-yard run in the second quarter, and his pass reception from Rickey Foggie gave the Gophers (5-4, 4-2) a 24-13 lead over the Badgers (3-7, 2-4) in the third quarter.
