Doubleday & Co. signed an agreement to sell its 95% share of the New York Mets to a newly created firm controlled by Nelson Doubleday and Fred Wilpon for $80.75 million, a transaction that will keep the club in the same hands.

The sale kept the Mets from becoming part of the property of Bertelsmann AG, a West Germany publishing house that last month purchased Doubleday & Co., the publishing firm founded in 1897 by Nelson Doubleday’s grandfather.
