Schmidt Wins NL MVP 3rd Time
Mike Schmidt of the Philadelphia Phillies was named the National League’s Most Valuable Player today by the Baseball Writers’ Assn. of America, becoming only the third player in NL history to win the award three times.
The 37-year-old third baseman, who also won in 1980 and 1981, was a runaway winner over first baseman Glenn Davis of the Houston Astros and catcher Gary Carter of the New York Mets. Schmidt joins Stan Musial of the St. Louis Cardinals and Roy Campanella of the Brooklyn Dodgers as the only three-time winners of the NL MVP since the award was started in 1931.
