Pasadena : Affirmative Action Study

The Board of City Directors has formed a panel to examine a recommendation by the Commission on the Status of Women that the city’s 5-year-old affirmative-action program be dismantled and restructured.

In its report to the board last week, the commission found that city employees and residents do not have confidence in the program.

“The present organization of the city affirmative-action program is not effective in reaching the goals of the program,” the report said.

The commission said the program had failed to carry out many of the requirements imposed by the city’s Affirmative Action Ordinance in regard to collecting information about employment of women and older workers and preparing an annual affirmative-action plan.

The panel is expected to meet with City Manager Don McIntyre to discuss the program’s problems and will make recommendations to the board in three weeks.
