One of the top finishers in the 17th New York City Marathon has tested positive for drugs, and a second test will be conducted on the unidentified runner within a week, Allan Steinfeld, race coordinator for the Nov. 2 event, said.

The Athletics Congress, which supervised testing, informed Steinfeld that one of the 10 runners examined had tested positive for a banned substance. The top three male and female finishers were tested after the marathon, as were two other men selected at random from among the top 15 finishers and two other women selected from among the top 12.
