Cloverly’s Interception Preserves Anaheim Win

Anaheim High School safety John Cloverly intercepted a La Mirada pass at the Colonist 10-yard line with 48 seconds remaining to preserve a 14-7 victory over the Matadores in the first round of the Central Conference playoffs Friday night in La Mirada Stadium.
It was Cloverly’s second interception of the game and seventh of the season.
Anaheim (7-4) advances into the quarterfinal round. La Mirada finished 6-5.
For nearly three quarters, the game was a defensive struggle. Anaheim took a 7-0 lead in the second quarter on a four-yard pass from quarterback Ernest Johnston to receiver Kha Hoang.
La Mirada tied the score with 3:35 left in the third quarter when quarterback Eric Brooks scored on a keeper from the one-yard line.
Anaheim’s winning score came with 5:39 remaining. Wingback Steve Yabarra capped a 12-play, 75-yard drive with a 16-yard scoring run.
