Canyon High School in Canyon Country has won two state awards for its physical education program, which emphasizes lifetime sports and physical fitness.

The school won first place in the health-physical education category for high schools in the seventh annual California School Boards Assn. Golden Bell awards program. Bob Gravett, chairman of the school’s physical education department, will accept the awards on behalf of the school and the William S. Hart Union High School District during the association’s annual conference Dec. 6 in San Diego.

The Golden Bell awards program recognizes excellence in education by honoring creative and innovative curriculum programs in California’s public schools, said Joe Durado, association president.

Earlier this year, Canyon High School’s program received the “Outstanding Secondary Physical Education Program Awards for 1986” from the California Assn. for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

The school’s co-ed, elective program emphasizes knowledge of physical education concepts, physiology, anatomy and health, Gravett said. It includes daily calisthenics and jogging, twice-weekly timed and recorded running tests and recording of pulse rates every month. The California Physical Performance Tests for Physical Fitness are given twice a year. Skills tests and written midterm and final exams are given to all students.
