The World : Brazilian Protesters Riot

Share

An estimated 20,000 demonstrators marched through Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, to protest tough new economic measures, and ended up setting fire to 14 police cars and three buses. At least 13 people were hurt, officials said. Riot police and army troops hurled tear gas at the demonstrators, who carried banners and shouted protests against hikes of up to 100% on alcohol, gasoline, energy, cigarette and new car prices. Tanks patrolled the streets as police battled the rioters. Dozens were arrested, police said. The new measures, announced by President Jose Sarney last weekend, are designed to slow a consumer-spending boom.
