San Diego Roundup : SDSU Will Honor Coryell at Halftime

San Diego State will honor Don Coryell at halftime of Saturday’s Western Athletic Conference championship game against Brigham Young University.

The game will start at 4:45 p.m. and will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.

Coryell is the only coach in history to win more than 100 games in collegiate and professional football. His 15-year college record, including 12 years at San Diego State, was 127-24-3. And, in almost 14 professional years, including 8 1/2 at San Dieg, he was 114-89-1.

Phil Nickleson, the American Junior Golf Assn. Boys Player of the Year, shot an even-par 71 Thursday to earn a four-way tie for the lead after the first round of the American Junior Classic at the Innisbrook Resort at Tarpon Springs, Fla.

Rob McKelvey of Lawrenceville, Ga., Robbie Davis of Lakeland, Fla., and Chirs DeBusk of Jacksonville, Fla., share the lead with Nickleson, of San Diego, going into today’s second round.

Vicki Goetze of Hall, Ga., carded an even-par 72 to head the girls’ division after the first round.

The first Budweiser Pro-Am, the second stop on the 1987 Budweiser U.S. Pro Tour of surfing and bodyboarding, begins at 7 today at the north side of the Oceanside Pier and will end Sunday.

Surfing begins each day at 7. Championship rounds start at noon Sunday.

Deadline for entry in the Dec. 13 qualifying tournament for the Shearson Lehman Brothers Andy Williams Open at Torrey Pines South Golf Course is Friday, Dec. 5.

The field is limited to 144 golfers and all entrants must have an established handicap of 2 or under. Registration is $60 (which includes a season ticket to the Open) and can be made at most golf courses in San Diego County or at Gate P of San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium.

Top distance runners Thom Hunt and Steve McCormack, both of San Diego, will compete in the Dec. 13 Holiday Bowl Heart of San Diego Marathon. A 10-kilometer and 2-mile run will follow the marathon, which begins at 7 a.m.

Registration can be made through the American Heart Assn. and is $15 for the marathon ($20 after Dec. 6), and $12 for the 10K and 2-mile runs ($15 after Dec. 6).
