Bobby Ross’ future as the football coach at Maryland was the main topic of discussion Friday after his Terrapins concluded a disappointing season with a 42-10 victory over Virginia.

“I think I have a good job,” said Ross, who is expected to announce Monday whether he will stay at Maryland. “I have a four-year contract with three years to go, and I think our talent base for a football team next year is good.

“I’ve called a team meeting for 7:30 Monday morning. I will continue to fight for this football team and this program. I’m only asking a fair and equitable chance to compete.”

Maryland had no problems competing on the field against an outmanned Virginia team. Tommy Neal scored three touchdowns, and the Terrapins forced five Virginia turnovers in the Atlantic Coast Conference game.

Maryland, which had been favored to win its third straight ACC title, finished with a 2-3-1 conference record and was 5-5-1 overall. Virginia ended the season at 2-5 and 3-8.

Neal scored three times from a yard out, and Bren Lowery, Dan Henning and Alvin Blount scored on runs of 71, 8 and 4 yards, respectively, for the Terrapins, who have beaten Virginia 15 times in a row.

Antonio Rice scored on an 8-yard run, and Jeff Gaffney kicked a 21-yard field goal to account for Virginia’s scoring.

Lowery’s 71-yard touchdown run came on Maryland’s first offensive play of the game, and the Terrapins turned two Virginia fumbles into two more scores for a 21-3 halftime advantage.

“We were kind of dull for a while out there,” Virginia Coach George Welsh said. “Our concentration wasn’t very good. It couldn’t have been with all the mistakes we made.”
