Reggie Lewis scored 4 of his 32 points in overtime as unheralded Northeastern upset defending national champion Louisville, 88-84, Friday night in the opening round of the ninth annual Great Alaska Shootout at Anchorage, Alaska.

In earlier games, Walker Lambiotte sank two free throws with no time left as North Carolina State held off Texas, 69-68, and Iowa used a balanced attack to offset a 37-point performance by Alaska Anchorage’s Jesse Jackson to beat the Seawolves, 91-81.

In the last game, Utah State beat Washington, 81-72.

Louisville took an early lead, but the smaller, quicker Huskies repeatedly stole the ball and built a 36-24 lead with 6:12 left in the half.

Felton Spencer, a 7-foot freshman, teamed with 6-9 Pervis Ellison to lead a Cardinal rally against the Huskies, who had only one player as tall as 6-9.

Ellison scored 26 points before fouling out with 4:46 to go and Louisville trailing, 69-66. Spencer scored 15 points.

Benny Bolton led North Carolina State with 18 points, while Pat Fairs of Texas had a game-high 25.

Roy Marble scored 18 points for Iowa, making its first start under Tom Davis, former coach at Stanford.

Nevada Las Vegas 78, Temple 76--Gerald Paddio hit a three-point shot with one second remaining to give the Rebels the win in the semifinals of the National Invitation Tournament at New York.

In tonight’s final, UNLV will meet Western Kentucky which edged Memphis State, 68-67, on Kannard Johnson’s free throw with five seconds remaining.

Paddio, a 6-7 transfer from Seminole (Okla.) Junior College, finished with a team-high 23 points--all but two coming on three-point shots. Overall, he made 7 of 10 shots from 3-point range. Inside the 19-foot 9-inch stripe, he was just 1 for 9.

“Gerald has a lot of ability,” Coach Jerry Tarkanian said, “but because he’s a junior college transfer, he’s not sure what he should do. Against Arizona (in the first-round NIT game), he was scoreless until the last five minutes and finished with 13 points.

“We got to play him because we have only two shooters, Freddie Banks and Paddio. We need Paddio to play well to be a good basketball team.”

UNLV trailed by as many as 12 points midway through the second half before Fred Banks keyed a 19-8 spurt with 14 points that drew the Runnin’ Rebels within 58-57. Banks scored 17 of his 22 points after halftime.

Temple was led by Mike Vreeswyk with 24 points.

St. John’s 126, Southern 81--Willie Glass scored 33 points (14 of 19 shots) and Shelton Jones added 24 as the Redmen set a school scoring record in the first round of the Lapchick Tournament at New York. The previous high for St. John’s was 115 points against Rhode Island in 1956-57. Terry Bross added 20 points and Mark Jackson had 18 points and 10 assists for the Redmen.

In today’s final, St. John’s will meet Youngstown State which defeated Marist, 56-52. Tillman Beverly led Youngstown with 23 points.
