The New York Giants are the first--and perhaps the toughest--of four NFL playoff contenders the San Francisco 49ers must face over the first 19 days of December.

The Giants (10-2) take a five-game winning streak into tonight’s game at Candlestick Park and can clinch at least a wild-card playoff berth by winning. San Francisco (7-4-1) will play the New York Jets next Sunday, the New England Patriots a week later, and finish the regular season with a Friday night, Dec. 19 game against the Rams.

Coach Bill Walsh of the 49ers described the Giants as “the best team in football” a week ago.

“If he says they are, then I guess they are,” said running back Wendell Tyler, who rejoined the 49ers last week, three weeks after being released. He is scheduled to start tonight.

“I don’t really think we’ve done enough to put ourselves in that category,” Giants Coach Bill Parcells said.

His defense, however, ranks No. 1 in the NFL against the rush.
