BELL-JEFF

LAST SEASON: 15-8, 8-4 in league

THIS SEASON: Only post players Mike Dourisboure (6-1) and Sheamus Martin (6-1) return from last season’s team. Coach Joe Dunn has experienced reserves in 6-2 senior Ron Brabrant and 6-1 senior Tom Ressler. Bell-Jeff will be strengthened by several starters off last season’s junior varsity championship team. Dunn is relying on sophomore point guard Chris Dyer for his ball-handling capabilities. The Guards will be solid if they can “play inside defense and rebound effectively,” Dunn said. Key reserves are junior Chris Tinkham (5-11), sophomore Greg Dunn (5-11), the coach’s son, and sophomore Mike Cesta (5-11).

CHAMINADE

LAST SEASON: 11-11, 4-8 in league

THIS SEASON: The Eagles will rely on 6-8 center Kevin Black, who averaged nearly 14 points last season. Coach Mike Lynn said the two-year starter was a docile, finesse-style player last season but has become more aggressive. Scott Stuber (6-4 1/2) has been moved to forward. Tom Dieterly (6-2) is a strong offensive rebounder. Joining him at forward would have been either Andy Connolly (6-2) or John Carolan (6-1), but both are out until the start of the league season. Connolly has a back injury and Carolan is recovering from mononucleosis. Guards Brian Gehl (5-10) and Steve Hurdle (6-0) are solid outside shooters. Sophomore Sean Burwell (5-10) will join the team after football season.

HARVARD

LAST SEASON: 4-17, 0-10 in league

THIS SEASON: Harvard is the league newcomer after two straight winless seasons in the Pioneer League seasons and gets a slow start this season because of the protracted football season. With David Reiner lost for the season, Peter Andersons (6-3) and Mike Lowe (6-3) will trade off at center and forward. Lowe averaged 12 points and 11 rebounds last season. The leading guard for the Saracens is 6-1 Steve Green, an All-Pioneer League player with a 19-point average last season. Coach Greg Hilliard said Green is a “pure shooter with a high percentage from 15 to 20 feet.” Seniors Mike Patterson (6-1) Charles Adams (6-0) and Andy Bell (5-9) will play at guard. Other contributors include forward Charles Patton (6-0) and senior guard George Song (5-10).

ST. GENEVIEVE

LAST SEASON: 16-8, 10-2 in league

THIS SEASON: Coach Pete Cassidy has a strong rebounder in Dion Contreras (6-3 1/2) and an offensive weapon in junior guard Reuben Aguirre (5-10). Sophomore Marc Colon (6-2) and junior Frank Aguirre (6-0) are a pair of promising forwards. Point guard Gabe Medel (5-9) and Mike Cassidy (5-4) will play extensively as sophomores. Cassidy said the team’s strength is depth. Mike Walker, a 6-2 sophomore, and Peter Reyes a 6-1 senior swingman, will be the first two off the bench. Said Cassidy: “We have a good nucleus of forwards and guards this season and we plan to press a lot.”
