Community College Basketball Roundup : McGavran Scores 29 as Orange Coast (9-0) Beats Imperial Valley

Sophomore guard Chuck McGavran scored a game-high 29 points to lead Orange Coast College to a 70-65 victory over Imperial Valley Friday night in the semifinals of the Miles Eaton Tournament at OCC.

McGavran, a sophomore guard from Newport Harbor made 8 of 9 three-point shots and was 10 of 14 from the field.

Last season, McGavran set the OCC single-season assist record with 225. This season he has 65 and is only 35 behind the OCC career record of 321 set by Ray Orgill in 1977-79.

Mike Kelly added 15 points and 12 rebounds for OCC, which is 9-0 for the first time in the school’s history.

The Pirates play Santa Barbara in the final at 8:30 tonight.

Santa Barbara 68, Mt. San Antonio 51--Santa Barbara, a state semifinalist last season advances to the final with an easy victory over the Mounties who will play Imperial Valley for third place at 6:30 p.m.

Long Beach City 85, East Los Angeles 76--The Vikings advance to the consolation championship against Mt. San Jacinto, which defeated MiraCosta, 84-55

In the Antelope Valley Tounament consolation semifinals:

Cypress 85, Antelope Valley 75--Andy Olivarez scored 27 points and Jim Sammon 16 to lead the Chargers.

Cypress (3-5) plays Riverside at 2 o’clock today in the consolation final.

In the Grossmont Tournament:

Fullerton 80, Rancho Santiago 75--Troy Joseph scored 23 points for the Hornets (5-2). Fullerton plays Grossmont in the final tonight at 8 p.m.

It will be the second meeting between the teams. Grossmont defeated Fullerton, 89-86, in the Fullerton Tournament earlier this season.

In the Cypress women’s tournament:

L.A. Valley 70, Cypress 59--Jamen Washington scored 21 points and Demetra Johnson had 20 to lead Monarchs (6-1) to the championship at 4 today against Riverside.

Cypress Stacy Yokota scored 18 points for the Chargers (3-3). Cypress play ORange Coast for third place today at noon.

In Cypress women’s tournament action:

Riverside 73, Orange Coast 63--OCC’s Karen Rindone led all scorers with 19 points but it was not enough for the Pirates (6-3). Riverside is 8-2.
