Tennis Is Rained Out at Rancho Mirage; Semifinals and Final Are Scheduled Today

After having spent six years based in south Florida, the Lynda Carter/Maybelline Tennis Challenge packed up and moved to Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage in 1986.

Now--after just two days in Southern California--Carter and company officials probably feel like moving back.

Why?

Well, the traditional good weather of the area has staged a disappearing act the last two days. Friday was passable--both matches were completed--but not great.

Saturday, some club members saw plenty of tennis--on television from New York in the clubhouse. Outside, it rained off and on all day.

“This may sound funny today, but we moved from south Florida because we thought the weather would be better here,” tournament official Peggy Griffin said.

Actually, there was some tennis played Saturday. Chris Evert Lloyd held her serve in the opening game against Carling Bassett. The score was tied, 30-30, in the second game when rain started again.

Lloyd and Bassett are scheduled to finish today at 10 a.m. Martina Navratilova will play Stephanie Rehe at the same time in the other semifinal. The final, which will be on WTBS, is at 2 p.m.
