Community College Basketball : Fullerton Wins Grossmont Tournament

Troy Joseph scored 24 points and Bart Hakeman added 22 Saturday night to lead Fullerton College to a 91-88 victory over Grossmont in the championship game of the Grossmont Tournament at El Cajon.

Joseph was named most valuable player of the tournament.

The victory gave Fullerton Coach Roger See his 100th career victory.

Grossmont (7-7) held a 51-44 advantage at halftime, but Fullerton held the Griffins to only 33 points in the second half.

Grossmont’s 6-foot 11-inch center, Tim Karim, was held to just five points in the second half.

Five Fullerton players scored in double figures.

In the Antelope Valley Tournament:

Cypress 70, Riverside 63--Center Dave Kirksey scored 18 points to lead the Chargers (4-5) to the consolation championship victory. Andy Olivarez added 14 points for Cypress. The Chargers avenged a 74-71 loss to Riverside three weeks ago in the Fullerton Tournament.

In nonconference action:

Compton 67, Saddleback 60 OT--Andre Wiley scored 18 points to lead the Tartars (6-2) to the overtime victory at Saddleback. Compton’s Gilbert Miller made a three-point shot with 50 seconds left to send the game into overtime. The Gauchos (3-3) committed five turnovers in the extra period and were outscored 14-7. Lavert Simpson made four straight free throws for Compton to seal the victory.

In the Miles Eaton Tournament:

Orange Coast 55, Santa Barbara 49--Mike Kelly scored 21 points as Orange Coast College (10-0) defeated Santa Barbara in the final of the Miles Eaton Tournament.

Rancho Santiago 96, Phoenix 79--Howard Cole scored 21 points to lead Rancho Santiago to the victory in the third-place game.

In women’s action:

In the Cypress Tournament

Cypress 67, Orange Coast 63--Venetta Dorlis hit a 10-foot jump shot with 25 seconds left and Stacy Yokota converted two free throws to break a 63-63 tie and give the Cypress women’s basketball team third place in the Cypress Tournament. Yokota and Pam Fritsch each scored 14 points to lead Cypress. Fritsch also had 17 rebounds. Lisa Schumaker led Orange Coast with 27 points.
