When Notre Dame Coach Lou Holtz was at Arkansas and Texas A&M; Coach Jackie Sherrill was at Pitt, Holtz said he had a standing offer to visit Sherrill’s home whenever he got to Pennsylvania.

Holtz: “I got in there real late once after a recruiting trip but decided to drop by his house anyway. Not sure I had the right address, I honked the horn, and Mrs. Sherrill appeared at the door.

“I said, ‘Is this where Jackie Sherrill lives?’ She said, ‘Yeah, just bring him in and lay him down in the hall like everybody else does.’ ”

Trivia Time: Name the only two players who have scored touchdowns both in Rose Bowl and Super Bowl games. (Answer below.)

Ouch: Here’s part of a review of Joe Montana’s new book by Wes Lukowski of the American Library Assn.: “This is a disappointing autobiography. Not because it’s poorly written or because Montana doesn’t try to offer insights into his personality, but mostly because the personality revealed is so obnoxious. Montana whines more than a 3-year-old boy who has missed his nap.”

Would-you-believe-it dept.: Brent Fullwood of Auburn has netted more yards than the combined yardage of USC’s top four running backs--Ryan Knight, Aaron Emanuel, Todd Steele and Leroy Holt--and he’s done it in fewer than half the carries.

Fullwood has 1,391 yards in 167 carries, an 8.3 average. The four Trojans have 1,358 yards in 348 carries, a 3.9 average.

“We’re going up there and kick their butts,” he said.

Predictably, the Boston Garden fans were all over him when the teams met again Friday night.

Said Barkley after Boston’s 108-106 win: “I don’t like the people of Boston. I think I should call Ripley’s because they have the greatest collection of bleeps ever up here.

“The crowd doesn’t bother me. I’m glad they came, they paid a couple of guys’ salaries.”

Doug Flutie wasn’t the only shrimp from Boston College to upstage the big boys Sunday.

Brian Brennan, also 5-9, was Cleveland’s leading receiver and caught the game-winning pass in the 21-17 win over Buffalo.

He was the top receiver at Boston College in Flutie’s junior year.

Add Flutie: Said Chicago Bear personnel director Bill Tobin last week, still not enthralled with Mike Ditka’s decision to obtain Flutie: “We’ll see what he can do on the field. I won’t make any predictions. But to me, the Heisman Trophy is given for college achievement. The Heisman Trophy doesn’t indicate pro potential.”

Trivia Answer: Lynn Swann (USC and Pittsburgh Steelers) and Rob Lytle (Michigan and Denver Broncos).
