Anaheim Stadium Telephone Threats Cause Landry to Briefly Leave Field

A gray fedora wasn’t the only thing Tom Landry was wearing that distinguished him from the average football coach Sunday night in Anaheim Stadium. After the third quarter of the Rams’ 29-10 win over the Cowboys, Landry was outfitted with a bullet-proof vest.

Shortly after time expired in the third quarter, Landry was escorted off the field by police and security personnel. Later it was revealed that “a series of telephone threats” had been made against the Dallas coach.

According to a statement issued by the Cowboys, “It was deemed by authorities they (the threats) were serious enough to warrant taking Landry to the dressing room, where the situation was evaluated and investigated.

“After doing such, it was decided by Landry to return to the field,” where he remained under close security.

The calls were telephoned into Anaheim Stadium during the game, the Cowboys said. There was no immediate word as to how many were made.

Landry remained on the sidelines for the rest of the game and left the field through a different exit than the team.
