STRIKE AT A GLANCE

Share

Here are key issues that led to Monday’s bus strike:

Money: A 7.5% wage hike over 3 1/2 years offered by the Orange County Transit District was rejected by United Transportation Union Local 19, which had sought 10% over three years.

Absenteeism: OCTD sought to cut by half an estimated 11% absenteeism rate among drivers; union claims actual rate is 6%.

Part-time drivers: OCTD sought to increase use of part-time drivers from the current 10% to 20% by the third year of contract; union offered to accept an increase to 15%.

Drug tests: OCTD sought mandatory drug screening before renewal of licenses at OCTD’s own facility; union wants members to have tests conducted by physicians or labs of their own choosing.

Cost of Living: OCTD wanted to end cost-of-living increases for employees; union said such increases have been part of its contracts with OCTD for 12 years.
