College Basketball Roundup : Western Michigan Stuns Michigan

Western Michigan, which lost to Westmont by 26 points last Friday night, upset Michigan, 62-59, Monday night on forward Steve Amundson’s three-point basket with three seconds left at Ann Arbor, Mich.
Amundson’s basket halted a Wolverine comeback from a 16-point deficit to a 57-53 lead with 4:24 to play.
The win was Western Michigan’s first of the season after three losses. The loss snapped Michigan’s three-game winning streak.
Antoine Joubert’s basket put Michigan ahead, 57-53, but Western Michigan scored six straight points and regained the lead, 59-57, on a jumper by Amundson with 1:21 left.
Michigan tied the game, 59-59, on a dunk by sophomore Glen Rice with 50 seconds left.
Guard Gary Grant scored 16 points for Michigan (4-2). Joubert had 14.
Purdue 77, Wichita St. 61--The Boilermakers used scoring spurts of 9-2 and 17-9 and a tight defense in the first half to build a 42-30 lead at West Lafayette, Ind.
Sophomore center Melvin McCants scored 20 points for No. 3 Purdue (4-0). Everette Stephens added 15 points and Doug Lee 10.
Wichita State (3-2) hit only 19 of 53 field goals (36%). Purdue shot 55%.
Illinois 85, Eastern Illinois 51--Forward Ken Norman scored 21 points at Champaign, Ill, and led the No. 6 Illini to their fifth victory without a loss.
Dave Stein led Eastern Illinois (2-1) with 11 points.
CS Bakersfield 90, SE Louisiana 83--Earl Hawkins led a second-half comeback from a 10-point deficit and finished with 20 points to lead the Roadrunners over the winless Lions at Hammond, La.
Gerald Jones scored a school-record 38 points for SE Louisiana (0-7).
CS Bakersfield is 4-2.
Ohio State 89, Bowling Green 52--The Buckeyes stretched their record to 5-0 and extended the nation’s longest Division I winning streak to 10 games as Dennis Hopson scored 24 points at Columbus, Ohio.
Bowling Green (1-2) was led by Frank Booker with 18 points.
Arizona 76, Northern Arizona 69--Sean Elliott scored 24 points to lead the Wildcats at Flagstaff, Ariz.
Arizona is 2-2. Northern Arizona (2-3) was led by Rob Matasic with 16 points.
Navy 92, St. Leo 57--Center David Robinson scored 30 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and blocked 6 shots to lead the No. 10 Midshipmen at Annapolis, Md.
Navy is 4-1. St. Leo is 3-2.
Syracuse 83, Cornell 76--Guard Sherman Douglas scored 22 points and added 6 assists as the No. 12 Orangemen held off a late Big Red rally at Syracuse, N.Y.
Senior John Bajusz led Cornell (0-4) with 22 points. Syracuse is 5-0.
Montana St. 76, U. San Diego 66--Shann Ferch scored 20 points, including three three-point goals to lead the Bobcats at Bozeman, Mont.
The Toreros, who lost their second straight road game, were led by Nils Madden with 17 points. Both teams are 2-2.
Pittsburgh 99, Xavier (Ohio) 76--Charles Smith and Demetreus Gore each scored 23 points to lead the No. 17 Panthers over the Musketeers at Pittsburgh.
Byron Larkin scored 30 for Xavier (3-3). Pittsburgh is 3-1.
Duke 95, Davidson 65--After a sluggish start, the Blue Devils were awakened by Robert Brickey’s steal and dunk and went on to outscore the Wildcats, 8-0, to gain control at Durham, N.C.
Sophomore John Smith led Duke (4-1) with 20 points. Davidson (2-2) was led by Jeff Himes with 22.
